Some days we welcome rain. Other days we just wish it would go away. No matter how we feel about it, within rain is the survival of all living things. Without it, the earth would dry up into a vast global desert, and life would eventually cease to exist. Not only does rain provide life giving water, it also holds vivid lessons from our Creator. From floods to rainbows, there is much to be learned.

Some of the most beautiful things in nature can be observed after a rainfall, such as a colorful rainbow or the exquisite drops of water remaining on a spider’s web. And, observing raindrop covered plants and flowers in the sun’s light is breathtaking.

Taking walks after a rainfall when the sun is shining will provide a continuous visual feast for the eyes. And if the weather is not severe, taking a walk in the rain is a wonderful experience, too!

So slide on your mud boots, grab a raincoat and join us as we study and observe the magical world of rain!

Remarkable Rain will encourage you to observe the details of an approaching rain system through such things as the five senses and art journaling.

You’ll actually get outside in the rain (when the weather is safe) to examine, experiment and make notes about a variety of topics including erosion, run-off, plant and animal behaviors and much more!

And, you’ll get outside soon after the rain for many more activities such as photography, soil discoveries, and witnessing the water cycle to name just a few.

There are more than 45 creative nature walk ideas!

Inside, continue your discoveries through more than 20 hands-on experiments and demonstrations that will help you understand more about the hows and whys of rain.  As usual, we’ve also included several art ideas.

  • Make weather prediction tools.
  • Measure the power of rain.
  • Simulate various types of weather.
  • Experiment with ground saturation.
  • Even experiment with (safe) lightning!

Almost 20 writing & research activities will help you learn about the water cycle, weather fronts, erosion, pollution, storms, rainbows, plant and animal adaptations, rain forests, deserts, the list goes on and on.

And if that’s not enough already, eighteen notebooking pages are included, too!

No matter the season, rain is a sight to behold.  We should embrace those gray, dingy days and turn them into praises to God for His life-giving supply of rain!

This NaturExplorers guide pairs well with any study of weather, water, erosion, or general earth science.

About NaturExplorers

NaturExplorers: Educational Journeys into God’s Creation

What will I find in each NaturExplorers guide?

  • Inspirational literature suggestions
  • Background information for the parent or teacher concerning the main focus of the nature topic
  • An abundance of creative nature walks
  • Follow-up hands-on activity ideas
  • Writing and research ideas that encompass several subject areas
  • References for Bible study, artist study, composer study and poetry tie-ins
  • Child-friendly internet links and book lists for further study
  • Ideas for adapting the material for younger and older children, as well as ideas for groups of children
  • Several colorful, prepared notebooking pages
  • General nature study suggestions

For what grade levels are the NaturExplorers guides appropriate?

The NaturExplorers series was written with 1st-8th graders in mind.  All of the activities in the curriculum are very adaptable for all ages, though, and specific ideas are included for incorporating your older and younger students. We have personally used NaturExplorers with children from three to fifteen, with all ages (even adults) drawn in almost magically.

Are NaturExplorers guides appropriate for group situations like co-ops, clubs or traditional classrooms?

Yes!  Most of the ideas can easily be used with groups of children -traditional classrooms, homeschool co-ops, summer camps, after school programs, 4-H programs, and more.  Additionally, there is a small section of ideas written specifically with groups in mind.

Are NaturExplorers guides only appropriate for those using a certain homeschooling method?

Any homeschooler using any homeschooling style will find NaturExplorers guides useful.  Charlotte Mason homeschoolers will love the ideas for tying in poetry and artist and composer studies, as well as the living literature lists to enhance learning.  Those who use unit studies will be excited that most of what they need for a full unit study is already here.  Unschoolers will appreciate the ability to find easy to implement ideas at just the right time.  Project-Based homeschoolers will be excited at the large amount of project ideas that meet many learning styles.  Traditional and Classical homeschoolers will be able to pull as little or as much from the ideas as they desire.

New homeschoolers and teachers will appreciate the thoroughly laid out ideas, while veteran homeschoolers and teachers will be thankful that the ideas are already pulled together and ready to use.

How long does each NaturExplorers study last?

It depends entirely on how you decide to use the curriculum.  Since the guides are extremely flexible, you might choose to spend a week, two weeks, a month, or more immersing your family in the study of one topic – much like a unit study.  If you simply need nature walk ideas, you might spend one month or one year on a single topic.  Either way, you’ll have plenty of ideas to keep you busy!

The beauty of each study is its adaptability. You can simply pick one nature walk and put the book down, or you can take nature walks again and again focusing on the same nature topic and not run out of new ideas for a very long time. If desired, the nature topic can be used as a full-fledged, science-based unit study. Besides math and phonics, you will find ideas for virtually every other subject. Some of the guides even include a hands-on math idea or two!

What if I can’t find the books you recommend at the library?

No need to worry!  The NaturExplorers curriculum is not at all dependent on the literature suggestions.  You are free to find other books on the same topic, or leave extra reading out completely.

Which NaturExplorers studies are appropriate for the various seasons?

This answer varies depending on the part of the world in which you live.  A sample list provided below is most appropriate for those who enjoy each of the four seasons in their fullness.  Keep an eye open in your area and you’ll soon see which topics are most appropriate during a particular season.

For instance, if you have access to any flower anywhere in the world, you will be able to use the Wonderful Wildflower guide. Or, if you have access to any deciduous tree, you will be able to use the Delightful Deciduous Trees guide.

Oh, what peace this quote brings to my soul. It’ Oh, what peace this quote brings to my soul. It’s true, you know. I’ve told my children for years that it only takes a nature walk to see God through His handiwork and to know that His promises are true.⠀
⠀
When the world seems to be falling apart around you, the sun never stops shining. The seasons never stop moving. Without a single, solitary effort of human hands, the woodlands still buzz with life.⠀
⠀
A student of nature can see the consistency in cycles and notice the incredible and creative intricacy of even the smallest specimen and be in awe that we truly serve a God who isn’t unaware of even one tiny detail in our world right now. ⠀
⠀
Life kind of seems overwhelming, though, I know. Remember when I said my motto lately has been to just put one foot in front of the other to do the next right thing? Nature walks (even when it’s cold) never fail me as a right thing. ⠀
⠀
Breathe, friend. Take a nature walk today and let God speak to your soul.⠀

It might seem trite to post a winter picture book It might seem trite to post a winter picture book list right now, but I’m a big believer in keeping things as normal as possible in my home when things aren’t so normal otherwise.⠀
⠀
It’s the principle of putting one foot in front of the other as you simply do the next right thing. Good books almost always can be a “next right thing” choice.⠀
⠀
Even though I’m not homeschooling younger children anymore, I’ll probably never stop sharing wonderful picture book ideas with you. 🤓 I’ve spent way too many hours reading and collecting to ever stop loving them!⠀
⠀
Eli and I may not be using these books right now, but they are still some of my favorites for winter reading. Whatever may be going on around you, the winter months are always a good time of year to get in lots of extra reading. Snuggling and hot chocolate are optional, but encouraged.⠀

Merry Christmas from the Wests! 🎄 Merry Christmas from the Wests! 🎄
Christmas picture books are some of my very favori Christmas picture books are some of my very favorite books of all time. I’ve spent years collecting new ones here and there (and will probably continue collecting for years to come because there are at least a few favorites I still don’t own).🤗🤫⠀
⠀
When the kiddos were younger, I would sometimes wrap each of the books and place them in a basket near the Christmas tree. 🎁 Each morning during December, one of my children would choose a book to unwrap and that was the one we would read for the day. Oh, such precious memories!⠀
⠀
This year, even though my youngest is in 8th grade, the books are not hidden away! I’ve found a creative way to read them with Eli. We’re using them as mentor texts for his own stories during language arts. #sneakysmart (He’s writing some pretty great stories, too!)⠀

Did you know the main purpose of my blog for the l Did you know the main purpose of my blog for the last 14 years has been to encourage you that you CAN homeschool creatively to meet the needs of your children and bump up the joy factor all around?⠀
⠀
Creative homeschooling doesn’t have to be hard. You don’t have to ditch all the boring stuff so that every single moment of every single day is a giant production that completely wears you out. No way!⠀
⠀
Instead, creative homeschooling is really just about making little changes here or little additions there to provide a better opportunity to learn. If your kiddo is struggling with the idea of multiplication in the textbook, you pull out the manipulatives and reteach it a different way. If writer’s block strikes during a persuasive essay assignment, you read a few persuasive picture books to ignite fresh ideas. If spelling brings tears, you move the lesson to a white board and allow your children to write giant words to move all the large motor muscles for renewed energy and fun.⠀
⠀
It can also mean replacing the monotony of learning with something else once in a while. This is where you can insert a unit study with living books, documentaries, field trips, hands-on activities, and more in place of a chapter or two in a history textbook, for example. Or, to take off for an entire day of nature study to renew and rejuvenate everyone’s mental state. ⠀
⠀
December is the BEST time of year to insert a little creative homeschooling into your life because there are so many easy ideas ready for you to use without much effort! That means it’s easy...even if you’re new to the idea. Click the link in my bio to see what I mean. ⠀
⠀
You don’t have to substitute creative ideas for everything in December! (But, you can if you want.) Now that Eli is in 8th grade, we don’t turn every subject into a Christmas theme like in years past. Instead, this year we’re simply adding ornament painting to our Names of Jesus Bible study, favorite Christmas picture books as mentor texts for writing assignments, Christmas poetry to our morning basket, and including baking and service projects as add-on afternoon activities some days. ⠀
⠀
Have fun and let me know how I can help!
