2013-14 Curriculum Choices Our Journey Westward

I love homeschooling!  Even as we dive deeper into high school, I can honestly say that it only gets better and better.  Real learning, subjects that inspire my children’s passions and pointing the way to the One all make homeschooling precious.

What do 11th, 8th and 1st look like at our house this year?  Here’s a peek into the curriculum plan.  Plan.  I always reserve the right to stray from the plan.  {wink}

Bible and the Big Kids (11th & 8th)

The plan is to focus on one topic per month as well as keeping up with Bible readings from current sermon topics from church. (1 credit for high school)

Brain Training Time

I’ll tell you all about the wonderful world of brain training soon – it’s very cool!  Until then, suffice it to say that we’ll spend 15-30 minutes as a family doing brain training games and the following memory work:

  • Monday – Latin
  • Tuesday – Geography
  • Wednesday – History
  • Thursday – Bible

Then, it’s off to independent work!

11th Grade

English: American Literature using a bit of each of the following – Home Base English, LLATL Gold, Mom’s Choices (1 credit)

Math: Jacob’s Geometry (1 credit)

History: Brimwood Press World History Overview, Civil War, Modern History via a bazillion resources (main spine = A History of US and Assesment Books) (1 credit)

Science: AgriScience (1 credit)

Foreign Language: Latin in the Christian Trivium (1 credit)

Logic: Introductory Logic (1/2 credit)

Civics: American Government in Christian Perspective (1/2 credit)

Guitar Lessons & Youth Band at Church (1/2 credit)

8th Grade

Language Arts: Wordsmith, Easy Grammar, Wordly Wise 3000, and lots of literature.

Math: No-Nonsense Algebra

History: Brimwood Press World History Overview, Drive Thru History America, Civil War, Modern History via self-study project-based learning

Science: Exploring Creation with Zoology 3 and In-Depth Nature Study

Logic: Mind Benders and The Fallacy Detective

Foreign Language: Mango Spanish

1st Grade

Phonics/Spelling: All About Spelling

Reading: Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons

Writing: Copywork

Math: Horizons 1st Grade, lots of living math

Science: Nature study and Science Made Simple, Grade 1

History/Geography/Cultures/Social Studies: Around the World Unit Studies

Daily Schedule

It varies, but looks something like this:

  • Chores
  • Breakfast
  • Bible
  • Brain Training Games/Memory Work
  • Independent Work
    • Mahayla is completely independent.  We meet at the beginning and end of week for accountability.
    • Caleb and I meet twice daily – before independent work for teaching time, and afterward to go over work together and make corrections
    • Eli has independent educational game, tv or toy time until I’ve finished my one-on-one teaching time with Caleb.  Afterward, all of his lessons are with me.
  • Lunch
  • History
  • Afternoon Activities (could be read-alouds, nature walks, art, play, chores, errands, etc.)

  4. Oooooh, I can’t wait to hear about brain training! We do a Theme of the Day, so I might be able to work something into that time.

  6. Everything looks great. This is the first year in a very long time I do not have a child in high school. I’ll enjoy having a little less stress in that regard.

  7. Hi there! I love the blog. How are you going to write up your transcript? Will you give info. about your classes? Are your children going to college? Junior college first? We plan on 4 year schools and we are using BJU online now but I want to branch out to do my own thing. I am scared though. I don’t want to miss anything. What should I do? I am afraid of being responsible for her work. Do you know if universities will accept home grades/transcripts? Any recommendations? Thank you.

    I am wondering if you’ve used any of the other Zoology books, 1 or 2? If not, is there a reason?

  10. Thank you, Shelly! We have used other Apologia books, but not the other Zoology books. There’s no reason except our eclectic choice of learning materials. 🙂

  11. I am homeschooling my 4 daughter’s.As of next school yr they will be 11th.9th,8th and 5th. We use allinonehomeschool.com as well as I use some other links for my 8th and 5th grader for Grammer/Writing. We use gradespelling.com for my 5th grader.I am looking into doing something’s differently for my High Schooler’s. Our girls were in public school’s up until this yr..we took them out because we moved to Indianapolis from a small town. They seem to be adjusting pretty well. My oldest is having the hardest time !
