Can animals live without a brain?
Can an animal really live without a brain? It sounds impossible, but that’s exactly the question we’re answering in this week’s No Sweat Nature Study Podcast. As you listen, you’ll meet three amazing ocean creatures and gather plenty of ideas for a starfish nature study with your own family.
Sea sponges, jellyfish, and sea stars all survive without a brain, yet each one is perfectly equipped for the life it lives. In this short podcast episode, you’ll discover how these fascinating animals sense the world around them and why sea stars are some of the most remarkable creatures in the ocean.
Starfish Nature Study
One of my favorite ways to help kids remember what they’ve learned is to ask a few simple questions after listening to a podcast episode. These aren’t meant to feel like a test. Instead, they give your family a chance to talk about what stood out, strengthen listening skills, and review the science together. See how many of these questions your children can answer before scrolling down to check their responses!
- What three ocean animals did we learn about that don’t have a brain? (Sea sponges, jellyfish, and sea stars)
- What is the jellyfish’s network of nerves called? (A nerve net)
- What simple job is a sea sponge’s body designed to do? (Filter water)
- What tiny living organisms does a sea sponge filter from the water for food? (Plankton)
- What helps a sea star move across the ocean floor? (Tube feet)
- Where is a sea star’s ring of nerves located? (Around the middle of its body)
- What part of a jellyfish helps it catch prey? (Its tentacles)
- What famous British meal was today’s science snicker based on? (Fish and chips)
Starfish Nature Study Video Class
Today’s podcast introduced you to one of the most surprising facts about sea stars: they don’t have a brain! But that’s only one small piece of their incredible story.
In the Sea Stars video lesson inside the No Sweat Nature Study membership, we’ll take a much closer look at these “superstar” ocean animals. You’ll learn why starfish aren’t really fish, how they move without bones or fins, how they can regrow lost arms, and the important role they play in keeping ocean ecosystems healthy.
Of course, it wouldn’t be No Sweat Nature Study without nature journaling! During the lesson, students will sketch and label a detailed sea star while learning how each body part works. By the end of class, they’ll have a beautiful journal page that’s filled with meaningful observations and scientific understanding.
