Homeschooling in December can be rough. We all need a bit of a break from the monotony of the regular homeschooling schedule, don’t we? Some people choose to take the entire month off to focus on the preparations of Christmas and turning the hearts of their children toward the One that Christmas is all about….
We’re a Charlotte Mason homeschooling family, yet we enjoy learning history and science through unit studies. Can those two things go together? If you’re a Charlotte Mason purist, the answer is no. Remember, though, I’ve said for years that we are “eclectic Charlotte Mason homeschoolers with a dash of Classical education and unit studies thrown…
Field trips have the power to open new worlds to our children. Art and music come alive when students are able to see and hear classic works in person. Science and history become more than just facts when students engage in active learning. No matter where the field trip is, experiencing something can offer an…
Most of you know by now that I’m the author of the NaturExplorers series of science curriculum. That means, yes, we do much of our science in the field – literally. While we can cover A LOT of science through nature study, there are some topics that are just learned better through indoor experimentation and text…
I love homeschooling middle school students. They are so ready to dive deep into learning because they finally have the basics of reading, writing and arithmetic down. On the other hand, they are still completely open to creative lessons. You can just do SO much with this age group! In our eclectically Charlotte Mason homeschool,…

My little horse lover is all grown up. This year she will graduate our homeschool and head off to college where she will major in equine science. Before her passion for horses blossomed, we knew her heart held a soft spot for animals in general – and all the jobs that come with those animals. …
As I began making plans for 2015 here at Our Journey Westward, I naturally took a look back at 2014. I jotted down my personal favorite top 10 posts in an effort to see if it’s clear where my heart is in this little cyber space. Most of you know my heart is to share…
Have the winter homeschooling blues set in yet? When the blues come around our house, my first line of defense is to kick up the interest level of our lessons. This might mean adding some fun art projects, science experiments or (cold) nature walks to our typical daily schedule. Or, it might mean setting…
I’ve never been much on blog statistics. I write what I write because I love to share homeschool encouragement and, in turn, document this wonderful journey our family has chosen. Statistics happen to be part of blogging, though, so I take a peek at them once in awhile just to see if anything I’ve written…
What a fun 7th birthday celebration we had for my little Christmas man. Grinchy green was everywhere thanks to the wonderful ideas I found on Pinterest. Even if you don’t have a December birthday babe in your house, these ideas would be great for a lighthearted gathering this Christmas season or a fun book/movie night….
