A Literature-Based Apple Unit Study for Homeschooling Families
I love unit studies, and autumn is one of the very best times for fun, nature-based science. By September, apple orchards are bursting with ripe fruit, and it just happens to be the birthday month of Johnny Appleseed! That makes it the perfect season for an apple unit study that your entire family can enjoy.
Whether you’re outside in an orchard or at the kitchen table with apple slices, you can weave together science, history, math, and literature in a way that’s meaningful and memorable. Let’s explore how!

The Science of Apples
An apple unit study can easily blend science and history, but we’ll start with the science.
Learning about the seasonal rhythms of an apple tree gives children a solid understanding of plant life cycles. This foundation makes it easier for them to understand other fruiting trees and plants, too.
Living picture books are an excellent way to introduce this science, especially when paired with hands-on activities. A few favorite titles about apple science will help your children visualize the changes from blossom to harvest.
Apple Nature Study
Nature-based science is my specialty, and nothing beats getting outdoors for a “science lab” on a nature walk. That’s why I love taking my family to the orchard at least once or twice during an apple unit study. And yes, we always come home with treats!
To give our visits focus, I often choose an activity from the NaturExplorers Fruits and Nuts guide. It’s packed with observation prompts, experiments, model-making, and kid-friendly research ideas that help children connect science concepts to real-world experiences.
No orchard nearby? No problem! You can still enjoy an apple-themed nature study by observing another fruiting tree and making comparisons. The Fruits and Nuts curriculum works beautifully for this.
Apples in History
I love it when picture book biographies fit seamlessly into a unit study! Johnny Appleseed, or John Chapman, made a lasting mark on American history by planting orchards across the frontier. His story connects beautifully to westward expansion, pioneer life, and the role of agriculture in early America.
Read a few picture book biographies about Johnny Appleseed, then take it further by exploring him as one of the eight naturalists in Famous Naturalists, a Nature Study Made Easy curriculum guide.
No Sweat Nature Study members can also access a special Johnny Appleseed video full of music, art, mapping, and nature study in the member-only archive of video-based nature study classes.
Apple Math
Apples make math delicious! Bake a pie or a pan of applesauce muffins, and you’ll naturally cover fractions, measurements, conversions, and elapsed time.

What Comes After An Apple Unit Study?
Once you’ve finished your apple adventures, you might:
- Spend a few days on a pumpkin unit study in October.
- Extend Johnny Appleseed’s story into a full westward expansion study.
- Enjoy a tour of the USA through picture books.
Whatever you choose, remember that unit studies are meant to be flexible and fun. This apple unit study is just one example of how science, history, math, and literature can come together in a rich, seasonal way.
