Discover how space, food, water, shelter, plants, and animals work together within a healthy habitat. Eight flexible multimedia lessons explore food chains, animal shelters, habitat balance, and the surprising amount of life a single tree or small pond can support.
What does it take to keep a habitat healthy?
A cougar needs far more space than a carpenter ant. A dead tree can still provide food and shelter. Even one small pond can support hundreds of living things.
Habitats are filled with surprising relationships, and your children can investigate them right from the kitchen table.
In eight family-friendly lessons, 1st through 8th graders will discover:
- what makes a habitat different from an ecosystem or biome
- why plants and animals need the right amount of space
- how food chains connect plants, predators, prey, and scavengers
- the surprising ways living things find and use water
- how animals use natural, built, and group shelters
- how a single tree can support an entire community
- what makes a small pond such a busy habitat
- how natural disasters, pollution, and other changes affect habitats
Your family will meet everything from redwoods and red-tailed hawks to camels, koalas, pond organisms, and resilient plants that grow after a forest fire.
One curriculum. Five flexible ways to learn.
Every lesson begins with Extract, where children learn through carefully selected online resources or living books. From there, you decide how far to go.
Continue with Explain for nature journaling, Engage for a hands-on activity, Elaborate for research, or Explore for an optional outdoor experience.
Complete a simple lesson in 10 to 15 minutes, spend an hour exploring several levels, or spread the activities across the week. Sample schedules are included to help you use the curriculum during morning time, as part of your science studies, or whenever nature study fits into your day.
There is no pressure to complete every option. Choose the activities that work for your family, combine multiple ages around the same topic, and enjoy meaningful nature-based science from the comfort of your home or classroom.
By the end of the study, habitats will no longer seem like simple places where plants and animals live. Your children will understand them as active communities where space, food, water, shelter, and living things work together in a careful balance.
