Explore the moon, planets, constellations, and more with a space science study for 1st–8th graders. Eight in-depth lessons offer nature journaling, hands-on activities, and research, with enough options for weeks of learning together.
Your kids can recognize the moon, but can they explain why its shape seems to change? Do they know how to tell a planet from a star or what they’re seeing when a “shooting star” streaks across the sky?
Space Observations offers eight in-depth lessons to help your family better understand what’s overhead. Written for 1st–8th graders, this flexible science curriculum combines clear explanations, nature journaling, hands-on activities, and research, plus suggested books and online resources for further exploration.
You don’t have to head outside after dark to enjoy this study. Your family can learn indoors, with optional skywatching activities to try together.
Explore the Sun, Moon, Planets, and More
Throughout the eight lessons, your family will study:
- What space is
- The sun and moon
- Venus, Mars, and Jupiter
- Constellations
- Satellites
- Shooting stars, meteors, and comets
Each lesson includes enough choices to explore a topic over several days or even two weeks. Read and discuss together, create nature journal pages, try an experiment, or follow an interesting question through research. Choose a few activities for a shorter study or spend more time with the suggested resources and hands-on learning.
You can use the same guide with several ages, choose activities that fit your children, and give older kids opportunities to take their learning further.
Put Science into Practice
Nature journaling prompts help your kids look closely at images, notice details, and record what they learn through drawings and notes. Discussion questions and research activities encourage them to explain their discoveries in their own words.
Simple experiments connect space topics with other science concepts, including chemical reactions, physical reactions, and surface tension. Outdoor prompts give your family opportunities to connect what you’ve studied with what you can observe overhead.
Less Planning for You
The lessons, resource suggestions, and activity directions are already gathered for you. Most preparation involves collecting supplies for the optional hands-on activities, so you can keep a lesson simple or add more when you have time.
Enjoy a focused space study or spread the learning over several months, without building the lessons yourself.
