These beautiful watercolors were painted by the Shaw family during our most recent No Sweat Nature Study LIVE lesson about hay bales. They represent one of the many reason I love nature study so much….families can learn together. ⠀

Even when everyone is learning about the exact same things and observing the exact same specimens, nature study is somehow perfect for everyone at the same time. Each person, young or old, can take in just the right amount of information for themselves and see the same specimens in their own unique ways. And, best of all, their knowledge and viewpoints come out on the nature journal page in amazing ways - no matter what. ⠀

Aren’t these lovely? I hope you notice the varied details - not just in the hay bales (which was our main science focus), but in the fields, the skies, and even structures on the farms. I didn’t necessarily teach about those things during our lesson, but when you give kids a chance to imagine and create - they fill in their own blanks.😍⠀

The garden is still producing a little bit here and there. 🙌🏻 I’m pretty horrible at keeping up with the garden after the busy canning season, but it’s nice to go out among the weeds that are taller than the plants to find a few treasures even into October.⁣

I was thinking the other day that the garden has been a great place to homeschool. I’m not talking about taking a blanket and our books out to the garden (although that’s not a bad idea). Instead, the garden has been a great source for learning about the life cycles of plants, plant families, the needs of various types of plants, and the damage pests and disease can do.⁣
⁣
Of course, a garden provides a great deal of purposeful exercise and sunshine, too! And, Charlotte Mason inspired mommas couldn’t ask for a better opportunity to teach life and homemaking skills!!⁣

As we get ready to till the ground under (to kill those giant weeds more than anything), I’m already dreaming about the next garden that will provide nature study without the need to go further than our backyard. 🍅🥒🥕🥦⁣

It’s been a while since I’ve said hi to new homeschooling friends around here. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
👋🏻I’m Cindy West and I sure have been homeschooling a long time.😆This is my 19th year to be exact. Truly, though, it seems like yesterday that I started this amazing adventure. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Homeschooling isn’t easy, but it IS worth it. I can wholeheartedly tell you that IT WORKS. Two of my three have successfully moved into the real world of college and jobs without a hitch.🙌🏻⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I'm not going to lie, now that I’m only homeschooling that third one (an 8th grader), it is definitely easier than it used to be. I wouldn't trade those crazy-busy days of teaching the whole gang for anything, though!⁣⁣
⁣⁣
One of my main goals over the years of blogging and writing curriculum has been to encourage parents to think outside of the box about homeschooling. There are so many wonderful ways to learn and so many things we can do to tweak things when they aren't working. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
While homeschooling should certainly be a serious venture, it can also be serious fun. What can serious fun look like? All kinds of things - field trips, nature walks, project-based learning, unit studies, science experiment days, gameschooling, living books, themed dinners, learning clubs with friends, and so much more.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
You get to design your homeschool.💪🏼Even if you don't have quite the leeway that others have because of regulations, you can pretty easily find ways to exchange or insert some creative learning. It can make all the difference when homeschooling seems like drudgery!
