Whew! I’m ready to get back to school just so I have an excuse to stop the insanity! LOL! What’s been keeping us busy lately?

- Softball

- Nature walks

- Fun days out with friends and family

- A music, art and food festival

- Walks with Grandpa

- Games with Grandma

- A VBS Carnival

- Caleb (and the other kids) could’ve done this all day!

- None of them minded being dunked!
I know I’ve been MIA a little lately. Between all these fun activities, the garden, planning for school and writing the next set of NaturExplorer units, I haven’t had much time for blogging. I have several posts in the hopper, though – how we planned our family VBS, a wonderful family event we did at church recently, the coming school year plans and some wonderful nature walk finds. Hang in there. I’ll get to the posts and start updating my sidebars soon. Hope you’re enjoying your summer!

At co-op, we have a “serious” field day with class competitions and ribbons and awards. A group of friends in our hometown also gets together for a more “casual” field day. Each of the moms prepares a simple game or two – many involving water and relays – and we just have fun together. No awards or ribbons necessary.
This year, we brought potluck food for lunch and our wonderful hostess opened up her pool after the festivities. My children always look forward to this fun day, but the pool made it extra-special!

Little ones enjoyed their own pool while the big kids played games.

Summer break has officially begun for us, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do. Have you ever met a bored child in the summer? That’s one of the worst types of children to be around!
Children homeschooled Charlotte Mason-style are usually good at keeping themselves busy, but I have a trick up my sleeve for those inevitable times when the kids need an idea or two for fun on their own.
Throughout the year, I’ve been gathering fun things and hoarding them away in a box that I’m calling the Super Sensational Summer Sparks box.

I’ve found cheap experiment sets, art/craft books, manipulatives and such at curriculum and yard sales that I’ve stashed away. I’ve also pulled out some things that have been sitting on the shelves for a while that will seem like new.

One or two afternoons a week, I’ll let them browse through the box for an activity. The box will be off limits the rest of the time so it will seem like a treasure chest waiting to be explored. Or at least I hope it will. As the box is emptied, I’ll fill it again with new items. I’m even thinking of adding things like a baggie of ingredients for play dough, a box of shells with a magnifying glass, a bag of water balloons. Things I already have around the house. I have a feeling that finding these things in the Super Sensational Summer Sparks Box is going to be much more fun than if I just say, “How about making some play dough today?”

It has been a beautiful start to summer in Central KY! Over the past few days, we’ve noticed many new wildflowers blooming on our farm. Since we live down a little gravel road and have to either walk or drive about 1/4 mile to the mailbox, I thought we’d take a wildflower walk and see what God has placed before us on this start to a new season.
Here’s a glimpse of our road. We only took pictures of things we could see without wandering too far off the road.

Here are many of the wildflowers we saw. Almost 1/3 of my pictures were blurry because I tried to snap the shot too close to the flower. I probably didn’t even take pictures of another 1/3 of what we saw. God is amazing!
Of course, where there are wild flowers, there are butterflies. We saw tons of them in all shapes, sizes and colors.

I couldn’t resist adding a picture of garden #1. We’ve harvested cabbage and broccoli already. The green beans will be ready in the next day or two. As you can see in the slide show above, the wild blackberries are coming on, too. I think tomorrow after church will be a blackberry walk!

We made a solar oven today!

It was so much fun! And easy! A pizza box, some aluminum foil, pencils, tape and sun are all you need to make the oven. Today was the perfect day to try out some solar s’mores with our good friends. A little swimming while the s’mores sat in the sun made the wait more bearable! (Not my pool – wishful thinking by my kids, though!)

The chocolate was a little runny, but that didn’t seem to matter!
