Slim Goodbody and a Healthy 4-H Meeting

Posted by Cindy on March 12, 2009

The Slim Goodbody Bodyology Tour came through our area Monday.  It was well worth the $6.00 ticket price!  I even won a music CD for sharing an awesome muscular ability I have – being able to close one eye completely without closing the other at all.  Now, how cool is that??

On Tuesday, our Homeschool 4-H Club had a special speaker who happened to be talking on the topic of nutrition. A perfect fit even if it wasn’t planned!  After talking about healthy eating habits, they made some fun little critter snacks out of apples, raisins, pretzels, granola and peanut butter.  Yum!

Our group usually gets to help bag take-home snacks for the needy children in our local schools.  They always enjoy helping with this task.

Newport Aquarium

Posted by Cindy on February 24, 2009

Did you know the Newport Aquarium offers two free children’s admissions per adult in January and February each year?  I didn’t until recently.  We’ve been wanting to go forever, but haven’t wanted to fork over the steep prices.   Our first trip today was made even sweeter with the $42.oo savings!

The Aquarium sits right beside the Ohio River with Cincinnati in the background.

Of course we saw fish – big fish, little fish, dull fish, bright fish, freshwater fish, saltwater fish….

Oh, and sharks.  Lots of sharks!  Many of the fish could swim over top of us as we went through tunnels under water.

We saw tons of plants native to particular waters as well.  Beautiful plants!  And anemone (which are actually predatory animals!) were all over the place.

There were snakes, eels, turtles, alligators and even some birds.  Oh, and divers, too!

The kids had a blast at all the hands-on exhibits.  The most fun was touching starfish, horseshoe crabs and sharks!

This is nature study at its finest in the winter time!  LOL

Abe Lincoln Celebration

Posted by Cindy on February 18, 2009

The Kentucky Historical Museum is a gem for KY homeschoolers.  This past weekend, they put on a HUGE event to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birthday.  Since Civil War history is just around the corner for us, of course we decided to go!

Meeting Abe and Mary

Period Dancing

An Awesome Special Museum Exhibit

Becoming Abe and Mary

One of MANY Activities

KY homeschoolers – If you’re ever in Frankfort for other field trips, the museum would make a great addition to your day!

Since we were in Frankfort, we decided to make a quick stop at the cemetery to visit Daniel Boone’s grave since he was part of our Westward Expansion unit study.

And take a look at the view from his grave site!

We love field trips!  (Even if they are on a Saturday!)

Equine Hospital Field Trip

Posted by Cindy on October 25, 2008

We live in Central KY – what’s often called the ”Horse Capital of the World”.  We’re surrounded by beautiful horse farms and have the priviledge of living near the Kentucky Horse Park.  With so much horse business going on in the area, there are two premier equine hospitals within easy driving distance.  Lucky for us, Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital agreed to give us a tour of their amazing facilities.  Horses that are worth millions have state-of-the-art hospitals with every just about everything you might expect in a hospital for people – surgery suites, recovery rooms, MRI machines, laboratories, pharmacies….

Here are just a few pictures from our day.

Doctors, nurses, interns and visiting vet students preparing for an emergency colic surgery.  All the surgery suites have viewing windows.  Since colic surgery is one of their messiest, they closed the blinds once the cutting began.

A doctor, ultrasound technician, horse hand and owner are looking at an ultrasound of this horse’s throat.

The x-ray reading room.

A healing horse.

The farrier’s shop where custom horse shoes and such are made.

The treadmill.

If you’re interested, they have an online tour here.  This really was an amazing trip!

Battle at Perryville Reenactment

Posted by Cindy on October 13, 2008

Saturday was the 146th commemoration of the Battle at Perryville, a Civil War skirmish.  With our history cycle focusing on Early American History this year, we couldn’t pass up this fun-filled day.

Last week was busy with two other field trips, as well.  We went to an African Masks and Money Systems class at the Hopewell Museum where the kids learned all sorts about African culture.

And finally, Mahayla and some other girls visited with a lady who restores old dolls for charity and makes her own doll clothing for sale.  Our American Girl doll-loving girls were loopy about this trip!

This week settles down a bit, but October always proves to be a busy month for wonderful learning outside of the home opportunities!
