We went to the Creation Museum again this week, and it did not disappoint! The first time we went was during the pre grand opening and several things hadn’t been completely finished. It was nice to see everything completed this time around. What an awesome ministry! What an awesome day!
Later that evening, we were able to attend a Stargazer’s Night with Dr. Lisle. We were supposed to have gone outside to observe the sky through telescopes, but the clouds didn’t cooperate. Instead, we viewed the night sky in from the planetarium and learned so much!! Let’s just say Dr. Lisle left no question unanswered. What a brilliant man! Considering we had recently finished our astronomy unit, this class was perfect!
If you ever have the chance to be near Northern Kentucky, you won’t regret taking a day to visit the museum!

We finished our astronomy unit this week! The kids spent a couple of days preparing final projects and presented them in front of the video camera on Thursday. They were able to choose whatever astronomy topic most interested them. It’s no surprise that Caleb chose astronauts as his topic. Mahayla focused on stars.
Caleb’s presentation included a talk about astronaut suits (see his helmet and jet pack?), space shuttles, rockets, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, dehydrated food and thrust.
Mahayla’s presentation included information about the sun, other notable stars, constellations, how to use an astronometer to tell the brightness of stars and some information about light years.
Using Exploring Creation with Astronomy as our main text, we did many of the free notebooking pages the author offers on her website. We also added in a few lapbooking activities and lots of hands on projects. I put what we had into modified lapbooks. The lapbooking activities were glued on the first flap, while the notebooking pages were simply stapled together at the top of the other side.
Our trip to the Answers In Geneis Creation Museum’s Planetarium earlier this year was a great addition to this unit!

Just a quick note about the first week of our astronomy unit….
The kids are loving our space station! It’s just some star lights along the stair railing with astronomy themed books lining the steps. On the landing below, there’s a reading chair and a box covered with star fabric. I’ve placed an astronomy game and more books on and around the box. I’ve tacked up a poster of the planets and some of their projects as well. Simple, but effective!
